Makena State Park on the Hawaiian Island of Maui is located south of Wailea, the Pacific oceanfront park consists of 165 acres. This scenic beach park characterized by prominent cinder cone Pu‘u Ola‘i and large white sand beach. Activities include swimming/snorkeling during calm seas, body-surfing, board-surfing, shore fishing, and beach-related activities. Facilities include a food concession, picnic tables and restrooms, no drinking water is available.

Big Beach, also known as "Makena Beach," is a popular for sunbathing and body-boarding by both visitors. Big Beach is 1.5 miles long and more than 100 feet wide, the shore is fairly protected from wind - the cloud-cover that stretches from the top of Haleakala to Kahoʻolawe is often present and has a cooling effect on the sand.

Little Beach, also known as "Puʻu Olai Beach" is a small beach just North of Big Beach separated by a steep lava outcropping and a five minute hike. On Sunday's, Little Beach visitors can enjoy celebratory drumming and fire dancing during the afternoon/evening. The beach is only 660' long and can become crowded at peak periods. Little Beach is one of the few Hawaiian beaches where local police tolerate nude sunbathing, though the proliferation of video cameras and cell phones has greatly reduced the number of nudists.

In the center of Makena State Park is Puʻu Olai, a dormant volcanic cinder-cone with a height of 360 feet.  The park is located on Makena Road, just to the south is the ʻAhihi Kinaʻu Natural Area Reserve.

The park is located 9.7 miles upland from Kula on Waipoli Road off Kekaulike Avenue and offers unique camping and lodging within the fog-belt of the Kula Forest Reserve at 6200 foot elevation. Extensive trail system in the forest reserve, including through a forest reminiscent of the conifer forests of the Pacific Northwest coast. Sweeping views of Central and West Maui, Kaho'olawe, Moloka'i and Lana'i in clear weather. Pig and seasonal bird hunting. Hikers should wear bright colored clothing – hunters may be in the area. Nights are generally cold; winter nights frequently have below freezing temperatures. No campground showers.
